How Flan works, how to read your projection, and how Flan Plan and billing work.
Flan is a budgeting and financial planning app that shows where your money is headed. You enter income, expenses, savings, debts, life events, and big purchases, and Flan projects them forward on a visual timeline, up to 30 years on Flan Plan. Use it on your own, or share a projection with a partner.
No. Flan works fully on your own. Sharing a projection is optional and part of Flan Plan.
YNAB centers on assigning this month’s dollars and Monarch on tracking every linked account, while Flan projects your income, spending, savings, and debts forward, up to 30 years on Flan Plan, without linking a bank.
Flan is available on iOS through the App Store and on the web at dashboard.theflan.app. One account works on both. Android is on the roadmap.
New users can go through an onboarding walkthrough that builds a first projection with you. From there you can edit any table and watch the chart update.
Not yet. Today you enter the numbers you want to plan with, which keeps Flan focused on the future rather than a transaction feed. Plaid integration is on the roadmap and coming soon to Flan Plan.
Flan is not a bank and not a financial advisor. It is planning and visualization software based on the information you enter. It does not move money, make trades, or give personalized financial, tax, or legal advice, and it does not connect to your bank yet.
A budget usually looks at this month and last month. A projection runs your income, spending, savings, and debts forward month by month so you can see what your balances and net worth look like later, and what changes if you move something around.
Yes. Each saved projection is its own scenario, so you can keep a baseline next to a what-if, like with and without a big purchase. Free includes 2 saved projections and Flan Plan includes unlimited.
Yes. With Flan Plan, the owner of a projection can share it with another Flan account by email and choose view or edit access. Both of you then work from the same projection.
It is optional. If you enter your income as gross pay, turn on the effective tax rate in Settings and enter your rate. Flan then estimates taxes out of your income. If you already enter take-home pay, leave it off.
Yes. Choose Avalanche to pay off your highest-interest debts first, or Snowball to pay off your smallest debts first. Your projection follows the method you pick.
Yes. Add the loan as a liability with the Mortgage type, its interest rate, and any monthly escrow. Add your monthly payment as an expense marked "Mortgage payment - with interest", and any extra principal as a separate "principal only" expense. You can also add your home equity as an asset marked Home Equity. Flan pays the loan down from your actual payments and shows a Mortgage Free card on your Summary page with your projected payoff date, balance, equity, and monthly payment.
Life events and big purchases are timed items on your projection, like a job change, tuition, a wedding, or a car. Add them with a date and amount and the chart shows how they change your cash flow and balances from that point on.
Nominal Return shows the raw growth on your savings and investments. Real Return shows purchasing power after inflation, by subtracting an average annual US inflation rate from each account’s growth rate. Real Return is the default.
Free includes 3 month, 6 month, and 1 year views. Flan Plan adds 3, 6, 10, and 30 year views.
It shows how many months of expenses your emergency savings would cover. Flan adds up the assets you have marked Emergency Fund, divides that by your monthly expenses, and fills the bar toward a 6 month goal. Once you reach 6 months, the card reads Funded. A common rule of thumb is 3 to 6 months of expenses. Aim for the higher end if your income is irregular, you are the only earner, or others depend on you. Keep the money somewhere safe and easy to reach, like a high-yield savings account, rather than invested in the stock market where it could drop right when you need it.
Yes, Flan has a free plan. It includes 2 saved projections, up to 10 rows per table, and 3 month to 1 year views. Flan Plan removes those limits and adds collaborative projections and extra themes.
Unlimited projections, unlimited table data, projections up to 30 years, collaborative projections, full access to future features, and additional themes.
