Flan exists because every other budgeting app felt like homework. Here is who builds it and why.
It started with a frustration we both had. By day, we work in corporate. I build forecasts, model cash flow, and help companies figure out exactly where every dollar is going and when. Companies don’t just look back at what they spent. They plan ahead, so they know what they can afford, when they’ll hit their targets, and what happens if something changes.
At home, it was a different story. My husband and I wanted that same clarity for our own money. We had real questions. How soon can we pay off our debt? If we want to save for something big, how long will it take? When can we actually spend money without worrying?
So we tried the apps. Most wanted us to link our credit cards and bank accounts before we could do anything. Once we did, they mostly showed us what we had already spent: charts of last month’s groceries and categories of past purchases. That’s useful, but it didn’t answer the questions we cared about. We couldn’t find a simple tool that looked forward and told us where we were headed.
The tools that could answer those questions were spreadsheets. I know how to build those, but most people don’t have the time, the software, or the patience. And honestly, after a full day of spreadsheets at work, I didn’t want to come home and build another one.
That’s why we built Flan.
